Attitudes of Non-Jewish Gen Z’s Towards Jewish Peers: Insights & Trends

Here is some general insights and trends about the attitudes of non-Jewish Gen Z’s towards their Jewish peers.

• According to a study by the American Jewish Committee, most U.S. Latino Millennial and Gen Z leaders believe that anti-Jewish hatred deserves the least urgent attention among minority groups.

• A New York Times profile of young American Jews who oppose Israel’s policies and actions in the Middle East suggests that there is a growing generational divide between them and their parents, as well as a disconnect with non-Jewish Gen Z’s who support Israel.

• A Gallup poll from 2023 found that Democratic sympathies in the Middle East now lie more with the Palestinians than the Israelis, 49% versus 38%. There was a clear generational gap, as Israel saw a net positive sympathy level of +46% among baby boomers, and +32% among Generation X, but only -2% among millennials.

• A 2018 article by The Conversation argues that many young American Jews are turning away from Israel as they are less inclined to believe that gentiles are hostile to Jews and that Jews are always at risk, as older generations of Jews have generally done.

• A 2021 survey by Springtide Research Institute on youth and religion raises concern about Gen Z Jews and their connection to Judaism and Jewish identity. The survey found that Jewish Gen Z’s are less likely than their peers from other major religious groups to say that religion is important to them, that they have a personal relationship with God, and that they attend religious services regularly.

These sources indicate that there are various factors that influence the perceptions and opinions of non-Jewish Gen Z’s towards their Jewish peers, such as politics, media, education, culture, and personal experiences. Therefore, it may not be possible to generalize or simplify the feelings of such a diverse and dynamic generation. However, it is important to be aware of the different perspectives and challenges that exist, and to foster dialogue and understanding among different groups of people.
