Meet Xiye Bastida: The Gen Z Climate Activist You Should Know

While Greta Thunberg has become a household name in climate activism, there are many other young voices leading the charge for environmental justice. One such voice belongs to Xiye Bastida, a Mexican-Chilean climate activist and member of the Otomi-Toltec nation.  Though she may not yet have the same global recognition as Thunberg, Bastida brings a unique and crucial perspective to the climate movement, making her an important figure to know.

Born in Mexico, Bastida witnessed the impacts of climate change firsthand, experiencing droughts and floods that disrupted her community. This personal experience ignited her passion for environmental justice. At 17, she moved to New York City with her family, where she continued her activism, organizing Fridays for Future strikes at her high school and quickly becoming a prominent voice in the youth climate movement.
What sets Bastida apart is her intersectional approach to climate activism. She co-founded the Re-Earth Initiative, a youth-led organization focused on climate education and advocacy. She also serves on the administration committee of the People’s Climate Movement and is a member of the Sunrise Movement, further demonstrating her commitment to collaborative action.
