Howard Medical School
Howard University Medical School (HUMS) is a prestigious institution that offers various programs and degrees in medicine, public health, and biomedical sciences. HUMS is part of the Howard University Health Sciences Center, which also includes the College of Dentistry, the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and the College of Pharmacy was founded in 1868, making it one of the oldest and largest historically Black medical schools in the US.
HUMS has a mission to provide high-quality education and training to students of diverse backgrounds and interests, and to prepare them for compassionate and competent patient care, research excellence, and leadership in the global community. HUMS also has a vision to address the health disparities and needs of the underserved populations, especially African Americans and other people of color. Howard University: 34% of the incoming class last year were not black. 6.6% of the incoming class last year were white. Only 125 are accepted yearly. Everyone have shot, if you qualify.Â
HUMS offers the following programs and degrees:
• Medical Doctor (MD): This is a four-year program that grants the Doctor of Medicine degree to students who complete the curriculum and pass the required examinations. The curriculum consists of two years of basic sciences and two years of clinical rotations in various specialties. The program also provides opportunities for elective courses, research projects, and community service. The program aims to produce physician-scientists who can integrate scientific knowledge and clinical skills in the practice of medicine.
• Graduate Program in Anatomy: This is a program that grants the Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Anatomy to students who complete the coursework and research requirements. The program focuses on the structure and function of the human body at the molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, and system levels. The program also offers concentrations in neuroscience, cell biology, and developmental biology. The program prepares students for careers in academia, research, teaching, or health professions.
• Graduate Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology: This is a program that grants the MS or PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to students who complete the coursework and research requirements. The program covers the molecular and biochemical aspects of life processes, such as gene expression, signal transduction, metabolism, and disease mechanisms. The program also offers concentrations in cancer biology, immunology, and infectious diseases. The program prepares students for careers in academia, research, biotechnology, or health professions.
• Graduate Program in Genetics and Human Genetics: This is a program that grants the MS or PhD degree in Genetics and Human Genetics to students who complete the coursework and research requirements. The program explores the genetic basis of human variation, disease, and evolution. The program also offers concentrations in molecular genetics, population genetics, and genetic counseling. The program prepares students for careers in academia, research, biotechnology, or health professions.
• Graduate Program in Microbiology: This is a program that grants the MS or PhD degree in Microbiology to students who complete the coursework and research requirements. The program studies the biology and pathogenesis of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. The program also offers concentrations in immunology, virology, bacteriology, and parasitology. The program prepares students for careers in academia, research, biotechnology, or health professions.
• Graduate Program in Pharmacology: This is a program that grants the MS or PhD degree in Pharmacology to students who complete the coursework and research requirements. The program investigates the effects and mechanisms of drugs and chemicals on biological systems, such as cells, tissues, organs, and organisms. The program also offers concentrations in neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, and toxicology. The program prepares students for careers in academia, research, biotechnology, or health professions.
• Graduate Program in Physiology and Biophysics: This is a program that grants the MS or PhD degree in Physiology and Biophysics to students who complete the coursework and research requirements. The program examines the physical and functional properties of living systems, such as membranes, channels, receptors, enzymes, and transporters. The program also offers concentrations in cellular physiology, molecular physiology, and systems physiology. The program prepares students for careers in academia, research, biotechnology, or health professions.
• Master of Public Health (MPH): This is a two-year program that grants the Master of Public Health degree to students who complete the curriculum and practicum requirements. The program provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education in public health, covering the core areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health policy and management, and behavioral and community health. The program also offers concentrations in health promotion and disease prevention, maternal and child health, global health, and health disparities. The program prepares students for careers in public health practice, research, advocacy, or leadership.
