Jenny Cavnar was born in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in a baseball-loving family.
Her father, Steve Cavnar, was a high school baseball coach and a mentor to many young players. Her brother, Cory Cavnar, played college baseball at the University of Northern Colorado and later coached at the same school. Cavnar attended Smoky Hill High School in Aurora, Colorado, where she played softball and basketball. She then graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in technical journalism and a minor in sociology.
Cavnar began her broadcasting career in 2006 as a reporter and anchor for Channel 4 San Diego, covering the San Diego Padres and other local sports. In 2009, she moved to Denver and joined Root Sports Rocky Mountain (now AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain), where she served as a backup play-by-play announcer, pregame and postgame host, and reporter for the Colorado Rockies. She also covered the Colorado Avalanche, the Denver Nuggets, and college basketball for the network.
In 2015, Cavnar became the first woman to provide radio analysis for a National League series, when she joined Jack Corrigan on KOA NewsRadio for a Rockies-Dodgers series. In 2018, she became the first woman in 25 years to call TV play-by-play for an MLB game, when she filled in for Drew Goodman on AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain for a Rockies-Padres game.
In 2024, Cavnar hired by NBC Sports California as the primary play-by-play announcer for the Oakland A’s, replacing Glen Kuiper, who was fired after using a racist slur on live TV in 2023. Carver will call the majority of the A’s games, alongside analyst and former pitcher Dallas. She will be the first woman in MLB history to serve as a club’s regular play-by-play voice.
Cavnar is married to Steve Cavnar, a former minor league pitcher and a current high school baseball coach. They have two sons, Cale and Case, who are both baseball players as well. Cavnar is also an avid runner and a supporter of various charities, such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association.
