C.J. Stroud is an American football player who plays as a quarterback for the Houston Texans in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on October 3, 2001, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, the youngest of four children. His father, Coleridge Bernard Stroud III, is serving a 38-years-to-life sentence for kidnapping, carjacking and robbery, and his mother, Tanya, raised him and his siblings in a small apartment above a storage facility. Stroud attended Rancho Cucamonga High School, where he excelled in football and was named the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin offensive player of the year as a senior. He also won the MVP award at the Elite 11, a prestigious camp for high school quarterbacks, and was selected to play in the 2020 All-American Bowl. He was initially a three-star recruit, but rose to become the third-highest rated quarterback of his class.
Stroud committed to Ohio State University to play college football, where he had a stellar career. He redshirted his freshman year in 2020, and became the starting quarterback in 2021. He led the Buckeyes to two consecutive Big Ten championships and College Football Playoff appearances, and broke several school records, including most passing yards in a single game with 573. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in both 2021 and 2022, and won multiple awards, such as the Graham–George Offensive Player of the Year and the Griese–Brees Quarterback of the Year. He also earned All-American and All-Big Ten honors.
Stroud entered the 2023 NFL Draft after his junior season, and was selected by the Houston Texans with the second overall pick. He quickly established himself as one of the best young quarterbacks in the league, and led the Texans to their first division title and playoff victory since 2019. He set several rookie and playoff records, such as most passing yards in a game by a rookie (470), most passes without an interception to start a career (191), and youngest starting quarterback to win a playoff game (22 years 3 months 10 days). He finished the regular season with 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions, and had a passer rating of 100.8.
Stroud is known for his strong arm, accuracy, mobility, and leadership skills. He is also praised for his humility, resilience, and work ethic. He credits his mother, his siblings, and his faith for helping him overcome the challenges in his life. He is a Christian, and often posts Bible verses and inspirational messages on his social media accounts. He is also involved in various charitable and community activities, such as supporting the Boys and Girls Club of America, donating to the Houston Food Bank, and visiting children’s hospitals. He is currently single, and says he is focused on his football career and his education. He is majoring in communications at Ohio State, and plans to finish his degree online. He hopes to become a sports broadcaster or analyst after his playing days are over.
