Early Cancer Among Young People.
There has been a notable increase in the incidence of colorectal cancer among younger adults, including those in the Gen Z and Millennial generations. According to the Mayo Clinic, the incidence of colorectal cancer in people ages 20-49 has alarmingly increased over the past three decades in the U.S. and other high-income countries. This trend is concerning because young adults with colorectal cancer typically have more advanced disease at diagnosis than those over 50, which can be attributed to a longer duration of symptoms and a delay in diagnosis.
The American Cancer Society reported that in 2019, 20% of colorectal cancer diagnoses were in patients under age 55, which is about double the rate in 1995. They also predicted that in 2023, an estimated 19,550 diagnoses and 3,750 deaths would occur in people younger than 50. This rise in early-onset colorectal cancer has led to changes in screening recommendations, with most Americans now advised to begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45.
It’s important for young adults to be aware of the warning signs of colorectal cancer and to seek medical advice if they experience symptoms such as blood in the stool, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, bloating, or changes in bowel habits. While the overall risk remains low, it’s a leading cause of cancer death for people ages 20-49, and early detection is crucial for effective treatment.
Some of the reasons for this include:
- Poor Diet
- Lack of exercise
- Increased obesity rates
- family history of cancer
- Increased risk due to genetic mutations
- Increased consumption of processed foods
- Lack of health care
- Inflammatory gut environment
- Alcohol consumption
- Sleep deprivation or lack of sleep
- Smoking
- Type 3 diabetes

If you or someone you know is experiencing any symptoms or has concerns about colorectal cancer, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for proper screening and advice.
